Clinical inquiries. Do glucosamine or chondroitin cause regeneration of cartilage in osteoarthritis?

چکیده
A systematic review of glucosamine sulfate use for osteoarthritis, based on early research (19561991), found that it has anti-inflammatory properties and rebuilds damaged cartilage. (1) These studies evaluated chondrocytes grown in culture and animal models. (1,2) Chondroitin sulfate also stimulates chondrocyte biosynthesis in both animal and in vitro studies. There is insufficient evidence to demonstrate glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate stimulates chrondrocyte growth in humans with osteoarthritis. (2,3)

Osteoarthrits: A revolution in treatment
Background: Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are integral components of articular cartilage and they have important role to the physiologic and mechanical properties of this tissue. Glucosamine is acting as the precursor of the disaccharide unit in glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) of Cartilage Materials and method: The use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for the symptomatic treatment of os...
متن کاملGlucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplementation to treat symptomatic disc degeneration: Biochemical rationale and case report
BACKGROUND Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate preparations are widely used as food supplements against osteoarthritis, but critics are skeptical about their efficacy, because of the lack of convincing clinical trials and a reasonable scientific rationale for the use of these nutraceuticals. Most trials were on osteoarthritis of the knee, while virtually no documentation exists on spinal disc d...

Background & Objective. Osteoarthritis is progressive degenerative disease resulting in significant affection of joints. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are widely used in this condition but are associated with significant side effects; hence the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of nutritional supplements such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin sulphate and...

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive joint disease, that occurs frequently in the aging population and is a major cause of disability worldwide. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are biologically active molecules that are substrates for proteoglycan, an essential component of the cartilage matrix. Evidence supports the use of glucosamine and chondroitin as symptomatic slow-acting drugs for osteo...
متن کاملGlyco-Forum section Dietary glucosamine under question
Annual sales of glucosamine as a neutraceutical for affecting cartilage in treatment of osteoarthritis are close to a billion dollars, but recent clinical studies have currently raised severe criticism regarding its functional value. Additional doubts can be raised by the knowledge of the well-defined cellular steps in glucosamine formation and production of glycosaminoglycans such as chondroit...
